Chelsea win Community Shield on penalties

Chelsea have won the Community Shield -- the traditional curtain-raiser to the start of the English Premier League season -- beating Manchester United 4-1 on penalties at Wembley after the teams drew 2-2 after 90 minutes.

Chelsea have won the Community Shield -- the traditional curtain-raiser to the start of the English Premier League season -- beating Manchester United 4-1 on penalties at Wembley after the teams drew 2-2 after 90 minutes.
The Czech Republic goalkeeper then produced a superb one-armed stop to deny Dimitar Berbatov while he also tipped a Darren Fletcher striker over the crossbar.

But Chelsea came back into things after the break -- and they levelled in the 52nd minute when defender Ricardo Carvalho, who nearly joined Inter Milan in the summer, headed home at the far post after Florent Malouda's cross was punched straight to him by United goalkeeper Ben Foster.

Chelsea were now in control and they took a 69th minute lead -- although there was an element of controversy about the goal.

Michael Ballack appeared to body-check Evra off-the-ball but the referee waved play-on as United had possession. However, they lost the ball and, with Evra down holding his face, Chelsea played on and Lampard eventually fired in Didier Drogba's left-wing cross, although Foster got both hands to the shot.

That looked to be enough to give Chelsea victory, although Rooney's last-gasp intervention meant they had to wait a bit longer before eventually winning the shield on penalties.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was unhappy with referee Chris Foy's part in Chelsea's second goal. "The referee saw the foul on Evra," Ferguson told Sky Sports.

"He (Ballack) clearly elbowed him in the face. I'm disappointed because the ref stopped the game twice before that for fouls, when Ballack was lying on his back. That incident cost us the game. There's no question it's a grey area."

Massa vows F1 return as he leaves hospital

Felipe Massa vowed to return to Formula One "as soon as possible" as he left hospital in Hungary to fly home to Brazil after his horror crash last weekend.
Massa suffered "life threatening" injuries as his Ferrari careered off in final qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix at 200kph and slammed into a tire barrier.

He spent two days in an induced coma after emergency surgery for a fractured skull and brain concussion and there were fears he would not be able to drive again.

Williams block Schumacher testing bid

Massa was the victim of a freak accident, with a spring from the Brawn GP of compatriot Rubens Barrichello bouncing off the track before smashing into his helmet.

He was knocked out and told the official Ferrari Web site www.ferrari.com that he had no recollection of the accident.

"It is sort of a strange feeling. I know exactly what happened, but I didn't feel anything when it happened," he said.

"They told me that I lost consciousness at the moment of the spring's impact on my helmet and I ran into the barriers, then I woke up in hospital two days later.

"I don't remember anything and that's why what the doctors did had to be explained to me," he added.
Massa left the AEK military hospital in Budapest with his wife Raffaela and his personal doctor Dino Altmann.

He will recuperate at home in Sao Paolo and his place at the European Grand Prix in Valencia in three weeks time will be taken by 40-year-old F1 legend Michael Schumacher, a decision with which Massa fully agrees.

"He knows how to win, he knows how to drive and he's great: it was the best choice handing over the car to such a fantastic person and I'm sure that everybody will be happy to see him back on the track again," he said.

Massa's teammate Kimi Raikkonen finished second in last Sunday's race, Ferrari's best result of a difficult season, and the 28-year-old Massa is itching to return to action.
"I'm feeling much better now and I want to recover as soon as possible to get back behind the wheel of a Ferrari," he said.

Massa finished second to Hungary winner Lewis Hamilton in last year's world championship and has 11 career wins in Formula One.

Beckham special but Barca win friendly

David Beckham silenced even his most vocal critics with a trademark goal from a free-kick but his Los Angeles Galaxy team were beaten 2-1 by European champions Barcelona on Saturday night.
The prestige friendly was watched by a massive 93,137 crowd at the Pasadena Rose Bowl and the 34-year-old Beckham was again subjected to catcalls and barracking from disenchanted Galaxy fans.

Pedro Rodriguez put the Catalan giants ahead after fine work by Lionel Messi, but Beckham stepped up to curl home a magnificent free-kick from outside the penalty area on the stroke of half time.

It was a timely reminder of his abilities after a controversial return to the United States, following his extended loan spell at AC Milan, which caused the England midfielder to miss the start of the MLS season.

He has twice been involved in confrontations with fans who questioned his commitment and Beckham knows he faces a tough time in winning them back over despite his superb goal.

"Maybe, maybe not," he told reporters.

"If I did then great, if not, then I'm not going to lose any sleep.

"Like I said before, I always work hard for the team, I work hard for the manager and I work hard for the fans. Sometimes it's good enough, sometimes it's not.

"But I enjoyed my goal tonight. "There's going to be the odd reaction from a minority of people. "But 95, 97 percent of the fans have been incredible."

Striker Jeffren Suarez spoilt the Beckham party in the 67th minute with the winner for Barcelona, who dominated the game for large spells.

Beckham, who was substituted shortly before the end, was given a good reception by the crowd, the biggest for a match in the United States since the World Cup 15 years ago.

Arsenal suffer shock Nasri injury setback

Arsenal's pre-season preparations suffered a blow on Tuesday when midfielder Samir Nasri broke his leg in training.
The France international will miss the start of the upcoming English Premier League season, and is expected to be on the sidelines for up to three months.

The 22-year-old winger fractured a right fibula during a morning training session at the London club's pre-season camp in Austria.

He made a strong impact in his first season at the Emirates Stadium following his switch from Marseille as he took his chance in the absence of the injured Tomas Rosicky.

However, the Czech international is now almost ready to return to regular first-team contention, having played his first game for the club in 18 months against lower-league outfit Barnet last weekend.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger had earlier called on the club's fans to support his existing playing squad ahead of the new campaign, following the $41 million departure of Togo striker Emmanuel Adebayor to EPL rivals Manchester City.

"The message is to trust the players that we have," the Frenchman told Arsenal's official Web site.
"This is a very big season for us, but I believe that we are in a very strong position. Big clubs have lost big players before.

"For example Milan has lost Kaka and yet Milan will go on. Arsenal have lost big players in the past and still continued at the top level.

"There are positive messages as well from the summer. Remember players like Van Persie and Fabregas have stayed here after being announced away.

"So I feel we have a big enough squad to deal with the targets that we have."

Wenger has recently admitted his interest in Bordeaux striker Marouane Chamakh, but the Morocco international is losing hope over any possible move to Arsenal.

"I don't really believe it much any more," he told French newspaper L'Equipe.

The 25-year-old believes it is more likely he will join Tottenham, Sunderland, Blackburn or Fulham in England.

"My bosses are trying to convince me to stay," Chamakh said. "But for me, it's a risk that I'll take. It's my dearest wish.

"My head is in England. We're talking about my first transfer, I didn't know anything about all the problems that this could pose. I'm having bad nights at the moment."

Lorenzo:Yamaha Bid not good enough

Jorge Lorenzo will delay his decision on the future with Yamaha. The rate he quotes from the team that Japan does not fit because the expectations are lower than estimated.

"I do not know, I think we have to wait longer," said Lorenzo to Italia1 television, answering questions about the future.

"I feel very happy because with all those interested. But I think, I was one of the racer who can beat Valentino in the future.

"I fight with them at this time, and I think my value is greater than what is on offer now Yamaha. We'll see what happens next."

With this condition, the Repsol Honda team the opportunity to recruit Lorenzo open again, although the racer had to say that Yamaha still be top priority.

Indeed, news that was circulating Lorenzo will moved to Honda. The good performance of this racer makes Honda Spain attracted and ready to recruit him to fill the Dani Pedrosa place- if then Lorenzo recruited Pedrosa out.

And, Yamaha is not too serious response to the rumor. This team would be where they passively wait for what steps will be taken by Honda and Lorenzo.

So, not too surprising if the new Yamaha contract that offers less in accordance with the wishes Lorenzo. In fact, the racer feel themselves to be worthy successor if Rossi decides after retirement contract with Yamaha on the season finished in 2010.

Yes, Lorenzo has shown its class as one of the competitors struggling in terberat Rossi MotoGP world champion title in 2009. Evidence, at this time continue to strictly stick to the top last.
After a runner-up German GP weekend yesterday, the number 99 is now 14 points behind Rossi's total of 176 points have been collected. With the remaining eight in the series this season, not impossible to counteract ambition Lorenzo Rossi to retain the title.

About the competition, including when Lorenzo finally decides if there is no exit terms with Yamaha, Rossi did not care. According to him, whenever and wherever, Lorenzo is a serious opponent.

"I have to think about it, is better with him at Yamaha or he move to Honda," said Rossi.

"I do not know. All have value and plus minusnya. In this case, I think he is a defeated rival for the weight, either with the Yamaha or with the other team," The Doctor firm.

Difference occurs after the German GP last weekend yesterday in which Rossi again become champion, while Stoner who had led the way in the competition must be finis order four, behind Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa to the finis-2 and 3.

However, the Ducati team would not surrender. With the eight remaining to complete the series of MotoGP in 2009, they remain optimistic Stoner could rise to retake the title of world champion who never achieve in 2007.

"We still believe can snatch the title," said Ducati boss Livio Suppo to Italia1 television. "Casey, including one of the four fenomenal racer, and the motor is also a lot of improvement.

"It must be admitted, Casey just past the three races that make it difficult destroyed. But,i think he will be back and I am confident we can rise to be in the future," added Suppo.

Before appearing at the Sachsenring, Stoner also had a broken health. The diagnostic results of the doctor in the United States - he conducted the examination after the full U.S. GP on July 5 - shows, that Australia racer is experiencing mild anemia.

Beckham involved in confrontation with fans

David Beckham has been involved in an ugly confrontation with supporters at his first home match for the Los Angeles Galaxy since returning from his loan spell with AC Milan in Italy.
The former England captain attempted to jump over a barrier as he left the field at half-time into a section of the crowd that had been jeering him.

Beckham was held back by security staff, members of whom were also needed to restrain an angry fan who left his seat and rushed towards the midfielder.

The 34-year-old explained afterwards in comments broadcast on Sky Sports News: "I tried to shake one of the guy's hands but he didn't want any of it. That's the way it is."

Beckham received a less than friendly welcome at his first home game after returning from five months with AC Milan -- the team the Galaxy faced on Sunday.

A hardcore section of the crowd booed Beckham every time he touched the ball and held aloft signs reading "Go Home Fraud" and "23: Repent" in reference to his shirt number.

Another read: "Hey Becks, Here Before You, Here after You, Here Despite You" while one stated: "Is evil something u are - or something u do?"

Earlier this year, Beckham indicated he wanted to stay in Milan rather than return to America, stating that the standard of play was far higher in Italy.

The apparent snub has angered some Galaxy fans, notably a hardcore that sit in the so-called LA Riot Squad section. Throughout the first half of the game he was subjected to jeers and obscene chants.

After the referee blew for half-time, Beckham tried to hurdle an advertising boarding and appeared to make a "come on" gesture towards fans. In response, one man left his seat, jumped down on to the pitch and attempted to run towards Beckham.

At this point security intervened and escorted Beckham to the changing room, while removing the fan from the pitch.

Despite the incident, Beckham returned in the second half. He was the last man to take to the pitch and hugged several of his former Milan team-mates before gesturing towards the rowdy section of the crowd. A line of yellow-jacketed security staff stood below the supporters in the trouble area as a precaution.

On the pitch, Beckham had a hand in both Galaxy goals, scored by Alan Gordon and Bryan Jordan, as they twice came from behind to draw 2-2 with the Rossoneri. Thiago Silva and Filippo Inzaghi scored for Milan.

After the second Galaxy goal, Beckham turned and shrugged his shoulders in the direction of the section of crowd that had been jeering him.

The former Manchester United star was substituted after 75 minutes and walked off to a mixture of cheers and boos. On the boos, Beckham said: "It's to be expected. Sometimes it goes beyond it. The majority of the fans have been great."

Man City splash cash on African star

African striker Emmanuel Adebayor has become the latest big-money acquisition by English Premier League club Manchester City.
The Togo international has joined from Arsenal on a five-year contract for an undisclosed fee, widely reported to be worth $41 million.

The 25-year-old passed his medical on Saturday night at the club's Eastlands ground, where he was later welcomed by hundreds of fans.

Adebayor's signing follows the $40 million arrival of Argentina forward Carlos Tevez, the $30 million deal for Blackburn's Paraguay striker Roque Santa Cruz and the $20 million paid out to Aston Villa for England midfielder Gareth Barry.

"It made me feel really welcome and special and I can't wait to play for City's fans and show them what I can do," said Adebayor, who will wear the number 25 shirt that he also had at Arsenal.

"I was born to play football and that is what I want to do. I have come here to make history for this club and those supporters. It is what the chairman and the manager told me that they want too and I can't wait to get started."

Manager Mark Hughes was delighted to sign the former Monaco player, whose agent tried to stoke a bidding war by offering him to City's local rivals Manchester United.
Adebayor had also raised the ire of Arsenal fans, who last season accused him of trying to broker a move to Italy's AC Milan following his 30-goal exploits in the 2007-08 campaign.

"Emmanuel has been one of the top forwards in the Premier League since he arrived from France, and we are delighted he has agreed to come and join us," Hughes told club's official Web site.

"Along with the other signings we have made in the last two windows, he will greatly enhance our ability to compete with the top sides. His arrival is another clear indication that we are determined to augment the players we have here with the best of international talent.

"He adds vital balance and power to our attack. He has everything a top forward needs - he is versatile, powerful, quick and agile on the ball. I am looking forward to working with him, as are the rest of the staff. He will definitely add a new dimension to our play. I have been a great admirer for a long time."

Hughes, whose club gave up in their high-profile attempt to sign Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o - now likely to join Inter Milan in a swap deal with Zlatan Ibrahimovic - has a glut of forwards in his bloated, 57-strong squad.

Tevez and Adebayor will be vying for a place with Santa Cruz, January's $23 million acquisition Craig Bellamy and Brazil star Robinho -- who arrived a year ago in a British-record $58 million coup.

Felipe Caicedo, Valeri Bojinov, Benjani Mwaruwari and Ched Evans have also been given shirt numbers ahead of the new season.

Hughes has released former England international striker Darius Vassell, while England Under-20 forward Daniel Sturridge has joined Chelsea for a fee to be resolved by a tribunal.

Adebayor will now join his new teammates in South Africa, where their pre-season tour began with a disappointing 2-0 defeat against Orlando Pirates earlier on Saturday.

Hughes is still interested in signing England defender John Terry, despite Chelsea saying their captain is not for sale, while Everton have rejected City's bid for center-back Joleon Lescott.
"That's Chelsea's stance and we understand that," Hughes told Sky Sports News. "We're obviously looking to strengthen in the defensive area. It's a case of seeing what level we want to go up to.

"We want to make sure we strengthen in the defensive areas. If there comes a point where we feel we can't advance any deal we're involved in then we walk away."

Manchester City seal $40M Tevez transfer

Big-spending English Premier League club Manchester City have completed the much-anticipated signing of Argentina international Carlos Tevez.
The 25-year-old was presented to the media on Tuesday afternoon ahead of City's departure the following day for a three-match pre-season tour of South Africa.

City revealed on Monday night that the striker has agreed a five-year contract and would complete his move from bitter rivals Manchester United after passing a medical.

A fee for the transfer has not yet been revealed, but it is reported that City have agreed to pay about $40 million to take over the player's ownership rights from the sports agencies which previously held them.

Tevez denied claims by his former manager Alex Ferguson that he had decided to leave Old Trafford as long ago as January.

Ferguson also said that he had offered the player a new contract on the night United played Inter Milan in the Champions League in March, but Tevez did not return his calls or text messages.

"I was there for two years and Sir Alex never called or sent any text messages in that time," Tevez told reporters through an interpreter.

"The only time he spoke to me was after the Champions League final in Rome when I was going back to Argentina. It doesn't seem that this is the way to treat a player in two years at the club. It doesn't seem there is a line of communication.

"It is United people talking about signing a contract (in January) but it is not true that it was decided then. I felt Sir Alex Ferguson and (United chief executive) David Gill did not do enough to try to keep me.

"The fact I did not stay at United was not because of the fans. They must understand a part of my heart will always be with them. They were always extremely supportive, even when I wasn't playing."

City manager Mark Hughes confirmed that the club had been in contact with Arsenal over a move for Togo striker Emmanuel Adebayor, who has been linked with a $40 million move to Eastlands.

"I think there's been discussions between ourselves and Arsenal but, as is my usual response about players that we haven't signed, really it's not the right time or place to discuss that -- only in as much as yes, there has been contact," Hughes told reporters.
"There's a deal to be done, possibly, but it's not been concluded as we speak. Until it actually happens, really it's not the time or the place to discuss it here."

The Mancunians have also made a huge offer for Chelsea captain John Terry, but the London club have insisted that the England defender is not for sale.

"I have fantastic respect for John Terry, ever since I saw him as a young player when I was at Chelsea as a player myself," Hughes said.

"He's a great player and an outstanding captain. But he's very much a Chelsea player at this moment in time. I think any manager would covet a player of the type of John Terry, but at this moment in time he's a player for Chelsea, so we have to respect that."

The high-profile capture of Tevez is a big boost for the club and its billionaire Abu Dhabi-based owner, who was forced to end his long-running bid to sign Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o.

The Cameroon international, who had been offered a reported $400,000 a week wages, stalled on the move after being offered a new deal by the European champions, with some papers claiming he wanted a big chunk of any transfer fee paid by City.

If Hughes does also sign Adebayor then the Welshman will have nine strikers at his disposal.

The former Manchester United forward already has new $30 million signing Roque Santa Cruz, January's $23 million acquisition Craig Bellamy and Brazil star Robinho -- who arrived a year ago in a British-record $58 million coup.

Felipe Caicedo, Valeri Bojinov, Benjani Mwaruwari and Ched Evans have also been given shirt numbers -- Tevez will wear No. 32 -- in a 57-strong squad named ahead of the new season.

Hughes has released former England international striker Darius Vassell, while England Under-20 forward Daniel Sturridge has joined Chelsea for a fee to be resolved by a tribunal.

Tevez scored 19 goals in 63 appearances for Premier League champions United after joining from West Ham, who he controversially saved from relegation despite a furor over his part-ownership with agent Kia Joorabchian's MSI Group.
He has won 50 international caps, and has recently returned from holidays following Argentina's latest World Cup qualifiers.

Tevez, who has won an Olympic gold medal, is the only man to be named South American Player of the Year in three successive seasons

Manchester City end interest in signing Eto'o

Premier League big-spenders Manchester City will renew their search for a new world-class striker after ending their interest in Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o.
The Cameroon international, who is about to embark on the last year of his contract at the Nou Camp, felt he should receive a significant portion of the £18million ($29m) fee City were willing to pay -- as he would be entitled to leave for nothing next summer.

City manager Mark Hughes initially signalled his intention to wait for Eto'o to resolve the wrangle. Yet, as the week has dragged on, the argument has just got more confusing and complicated. Latest transfer rumors and gossip

It was suggested City were ready to offer Eto'o a deadline of this weekend to determine his future. However, in the end, City chairman Khaldoon al-Mubarak did not even give the 28-year-old that long, with Barcelona officially contacted on Friday with confirmation the deal was off.

"Samuel Eto'o is undoubtedly a fine footballer but the circumstances surrounding him were such that the deal could not be completed," City chief executive Garry Cook told the club's official Web site.

"We now feel the time is right to pursue other avenues. We have a clear strategic transfer plan, which we continue to follow."

England midfielder Gareth Barry and Paraguayan striker Roque Santa Cruz have already joined the club this summer and Argentine forward Carlos Tevez is expected to complete his move from rivals Manchester United in the near future.

Chelsea and England captain John Terry and Everton defender Joleon Lescott also remain high on the club's wish-list.
Meanwhile, two players leaving the club are midfielder Gelson Fernandes and Brazilian striker Jo. Swiss international Fernandes has completed his move to French side St Etienne, while Jo has returned to Everton on loan for the season.

In other transfer news, Sunderland have swooped to sign Manchester United's reserve team striker Fraizer Campbell for £3.5m ($5.67m) on a four-year contract.

Beckham to confront teammate Donovan

David Beckham is planning showdown talks with L.A. Galaxy teammate Landon Donovan, who questioned the English football star's commitment to the MLS team earlier this month.
Beckham said the U.S. national captain was "unprofessional" for publicly voicing his opinions, which were reported worldwide from the soon-to-be-published book "The Beckham Experiment" by Sports Illustrated writer Grant Wahl.

"In every football player's eyes throughout the world, it would be unprofessional to speak out about a team-mate, especially in the press and not to your face," Beckham said before watching the Galaxy's 1-0 win over Chivas USA on Saturday night. What do you think? Was Donovan right?

"In 17 years, I have played with the biggest teams in the world and the biggest players, and not once have I been criticized for my professionalism.

"It's important to get this cleared up, and I will be speaking to Landon either this evening or over the next couple of days. Me and Landon will talk, but that will be a private conversation."

Donovan, who led the United States to the Confederations Cup final last month, said in the book that Beckham had been a negative influence since his high-profile move to the Major League Soccer outfit two years ago.
He said Beckham, who brokered a loan move to AC Milan last season, had shown little interest in the Galaxy since coach Ruud Gullit resigned in August last year.

Donovan, who leads the Galaxy in Beckham's absence, also cast doubt on the 34-year-old midfielder's leadership abilities.

But last week he admitted that he should have brought up his grievances with Beckham earlier.

"I don't apologize for what I said," Donovan told MLSnet.com on Thursday.

"I just apologize for the way I did. I should have told him to his face. I've long told David since he's been gone and I've been gone that I want to sit down and talk with him about everything.

"It's fresh in everyone's minds now, and it appears like everything has gone on in a short period of time, but this has been a long time coming. The timing of it makes it a little awkward and seemingly uncomfortable, but we'll be fine. We'll get through it.

"I like David as a person and I think he's a very good player. The frustrating part was at some point something happened and he seemingly turned off at the end of the year.

"Nobody knows what it was, and my fault is I should have asked him and approached him and I didn't. Instead I vented to a reporter, and I regret it."
